Cue the Eye-Rolls

Mention “resilience training” in a team meeting and watch what happens. Someone sighs. Someone else mutters, “Oh great, another session on breathing exercises while my inbox burns.”

And you know what? I get it. A lot of resilience training has been a bit rubbish: a one-off lunchtime talk, a few stock photos of people climbing mountains, and a leaflet nobody reads.

But real resilience, the kind that keeps good people well and businesses steady, is too important to leave to the eye-rollers. So I’ve gathered the questions people most often ask about resilience training, and I’m answering them properly.

Your Resilience Training Questions, Answered

What is resilience training?

Resilience training helps people handle pressure, recover from setbacks and adapt to change without burning out. It’s not about pretending everything’s fine. It’s about building the skills, habits and support that help you bend without breaking.

Good training covers the inner stuff (how you think, manage energy and respond to stress) and the outer stuff (the team, the workload and the culture around you).

Can resilience actually be taught?

Yes. Resilience isn’t a fixed trait you’re either born with or not. It shifts depending on what’s happening in your life, how much support you’ve got and the skills you’ve practised.

Think of it like fitness. One gym session won’t change your body, but regular training does. Resilience works exactly the same way.

Does resilience training actually work?

It can, but not all training is created equal. Here’s the honest truth: one-off, generic sessions tend to give people a nice buzz on the day, then fade by Friday.

What makes the difference:

Isn’t resilience training just telling stressed people to toughen up?

This is the big one, and it’s a fair challenge. If an organisation runs resilience training instead of fixing an impossible workload, people can smell it a mile off.

That’s why I believe resilience is a two-way street. Individuals build their skills, and organisations look honestly at what’s causing the pressure in the first place. One without the other is a sticking plaster.

What’s the difference between a resilience keynote and a workshop?

A keynote is the spark; a workshop is the fuel.

Many organisations pair the two: a keynote to light the fire, then workshops to keep it burning.

Do leaders need different resilience training from their teams?

Often, yes. Leaders need to look after their own resilience, of course. But they also need to spot when their team is struggling and respond in a way that helps rather than adds pressure.

A resilient leader sets the weather for everyone around them.

How do you measure resilience?

You measure it before and after, and you ask the right people. Validated tools like the Brief Resilience Scale give you a starting point. Anonymous pre-event questionnaires for staff and leadership show you where the real pressures sit, which are often not where the board thinks they are.

That gap between what leaders see and what staff feel is where the gold is.

How does resilience training link to ISO 45003?

ISO 45003 is the international guidance standard for managing psychological health and safety at work. It asks organisations to treat psychosocial risks, like workload, role clarity, relationships and change, as seriously as physical hazards.

Resilience training that’s designed around those risks, and measured properly, can become part of your evidence that you’re taking psychological safety seriously. That’s a world away from a tick-box wellbeing day.

How do I choose the right resilience training provider?

Ask them these questions:

If they can answer every one with confidence, you’re in good hands.

Resilience That Actually Lasts

I didn’t learn about resilience from a textbook. I learned it the hard way, on days when my body and my brain had very different plans to my diary. That’s what led me to create the ERA Framework, and it’s why every ReSpeak speaker brings lived experience, not just a slick slide deck.

At ReSpeak, we offer resilience keynotes and workshops for leaders and teams, plus ISO 45003-aligned workshops that are measured before and after, so you can see the difference, not just hope for it.
